Day 1:
El Dorado Airport – Bogota
Welcome at El Dorado airport by your English-speaking guide and transfer to your hotel. Installation and presentation of your itinerary by your guide. Dinner and rest.
Day 2:
Bogota – Paloquemao Market – Historic Center and La Candelaria Neighborhood – Monserrate – Gold Museum
Start your day with a traditional breakfast at the hotel before embarking on an excursion to the renowned Paloquemao market square. Here, immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere as you taste exotic fruits. Following this, enjoy a panoramic tour of the city’s historic center, featuring iconic landmarks such as Teatro Colón, Nariño Presidential Palace, Bolívar Square with its Cathedral, and
the colorful graffiti of the Candelaria district.
Experience impressive sights of the Colombian capital by taking the funicular railway ride up to Monserrate. Enjoy a typical lunch, savoring the local specialty, Ajiaco, before continuing your adventure with a visit to the Gold Museum. Marvel at the world’s largest collection of pre- Columbian gold artifacts, including alloys and ceramics from the indigenous Muisca and Tayrona cultures. (Note: Closed on Mondays). Return to the hotel for a relaxing evening. Enjoy exploring local dining options on your own. (Please note: Dinner is not included.).
Day 3:
Bogotá – Neiva – Tatacoa Desert – Astronomical Observatory
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before transferring to the airport for your flight to Neiva. Upon arrival, a private vehicle will take you to Villavieja, just an hour away, where you’ll check in to a cozy hotel.
Villavieja serves as the perfect base for exploring the enchanting Tatacoa desert, renowned for its striking rock formations resembling the Wild West. While in Villavieja, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Paleontological Museum, showcasing fascinating discoveries from the Miocene epoch, including 89 mammal species, 5 bird species, 32 reptiles, 2 amphibians, and 26 fish. Highlights include the fossil of the giant tortoise species Stupendemys geographica, measuring 3.50 meters long, as well as the Megatherium, a towering species of sloth.
Continue direction to the Tatacoa desert, renowned for its significant paleontological treasures and distinctive ecosystems, featuring tropical dry forests. The desert, shaped by the folding of mountain ranges and surrounded by water bodies like the Magdalena River, offers mesmerizing landscapes including “the cathedrals”, “the tower”, and “the valley of the ghosts”. Our itinerary spans approximately 3 hours, with short stops at key sites for leisurely walks to appreciate the formations and diverse flora and fauna. Indulge in a typical lunch at a local restaurant, sampling the specialty of the region, goat meat, followed by a refreshing glass of Panela lemonade.
In the afternoon, we’ll visit the astronomical observatory, taking advantage of Tatacoa desert’s clear skies, minimal light pollution, and proximity to the equator, making it an ideal spot for stargazing. At the observatory, you’ll enjoy an engaging talk on astronomy while observing various celestial bodies through telescopes and capturing stunning photos. Later, savor a glass of cactus wine in the Cuzco area, with a backdrop of the star-studded desert sky (weather permitting). Dinner will be served in the desert before returning to the hotel for the night.
Day 4:
Neiva – San Agustín
After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll depart in direction to San Agustín by private vehicle, with a scenic journey of approximately 5 hours. Along the way, you’ll traverse charming villages such as Gigante, Garzón, La Jagua, Altamira, and Pitalito, making stops to admire mountain vistas, canyons, and savor local cuisine for lunch (not included).
Upon arrival in San Agustín, you’ll check in at the Ecolodge and have free time to explore the village, its central square, and craft shops. Enjoy exploring local dining options on your own. (Please note: Dinner is not included.)
Day 5:
Horse riding in the mountains – San Agustín archaeological park
After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, immerse yourself in the cultural wonders of San Agustín with a morning horseback ride guided by a local expert rider.
This iconic tour takes you through the rural outskirts of the village, unveiling the secrets of four prominent archaeological sites. The journey begins at La Pelota, where you’ll encounter three statues in close proximity to their original discovery site. A short distance away lies El Purutal, home to four statues, two of which retain their original hues, offering a glimpse into the vibrant past of the region’s monoliths. Continuing on, you’ll arrive at El Tablón, an archaeological site featuring five approximately two-meter-tall feminine statues.
Here, explore a small ethnographic museum curated by the inhabitants of Vereda El Tablón. The adventure concludes at La Chaquira, where you’ll encounter intricately carved human and animal figures crafted from volcanic stone. Perched overlooking the breathtaking canyon of the Magdalena River, this site offers unparalleled views of San Agustín’s natural splendor. Visit a traditional village lunch, savoring the flavors of the region’s culinary delights.
In the afternoon, you’ll explore the San Agustín Archaeological Park on a captivating 3-hour walk (closed on Tuesdays). This UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts over 300 meticulously sculpted statues and sacred tombs, offering insight into a lesser-known pre-Colombian civilization. The park features a small museum, artificial esplanades housing crypts and figurines, the sacred “La Fuente de Lavapatas”, ancient dwellings at “Mesitas”, and the oldest site, Alto de Lavapatas, dating back to 3,300 BC. Conclude your visit at “El Bosque de las Estatuas”, showcasing enigmatic anthropomorphic male figures. Return to the hotel. Free time for dinner (not included).
Day 6:
San Agustín – Isnos
Embark on a day of exploration around San Agustín and the Magdalena River, Colombia’s longest river, via private vehicle. Witness the breathtaking “El Estrecho”, the river’s narrowest point at just 2.2 meters wide, amidst its vast 1,540-kilometer course from San Agustín to Barranquilla on the Caribbean Sea.
Next, venture to Alto de los Idolos (closed on Wednesdays), the region’s second-largest site boasting numerous tombs and statues from the Augustinian culture, following the Archaeological Park of San Agustín. Along the journey, indulge in scenic stops at various viewpoints offering panoramic vistas of the countryside and cascading waterfalls. Lunch will be served during one of these stops. Return to San Agustín. Enjoy exploring local dining options on your own. (Please note: Dinner is not included.)
Day 7:
San Agustín – Silvia et la communauté Misak – Popayán
After breakfast at the hotel, embark on a journey to the colonial town of Popayán by private vehicle passing through the lush Andean Forest surrounding the Puracé National Park. with a short stop in the “Valle de los Frailejones” to admire the scenery and savor “agua de panela con queso” (sweetened drink with cheese).
Arrival to the “White City”, the colonial town of Popayán, which emerges from the Colombian massif in one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the world. Check-in at your hotel. Dinner will be at your own discretion. Dinner will be on your own this evening, offering you a chance to explore local cuisine.
Day 8:
Popayán « The White City »
After breakfast at the hotel, explore Popayán, the heart of Colombia’s second colonial city and religious capital. Known as “the white city” for its whitewashed houses, wrought-iron balconies, and lush gardens, Popayán exudes colonial charm dating back to its founding in 1537. Highlights of the visit include the neoclassical basilica cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, adorned with a striking bell tower and clock tower, as well as the grand church of San Francisco, completed in 1795.
Enjoy lunch at your own discretion and spend the afternoon exploring the charming streets of Popayán or delving into its rich history at one of the city’s museums. Return to the hotel in the evening, Dinner not included, Explore local options.
Day 9:
Salento – Medellín ‘The City of Eternal Spring’
Depart by vehicle, in direction to the city of Cali, the salsa capital, on a journey of approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes, passing through the village of Silvia (total journey time approximately 4 hours). In Silvia, immerse yourself in the Misak culture with a visit to the medicinal garden and handicraft demonstrations, with the opportunity to explore the Silvia market if it’s a Tuesday. Enjoy lunch with the community.
Upon arrival, check into your hotel in Cali. Embark on a guided day tour of Cali with an English-speaking guide, exploring iconic sites such as Plaza de Caicedo, situated in front of the striking San Pedro Cathedral and La Ermita church. Marvel at the Gothic-inspired façade of La Ermita, resembling a small castle, set amidst the city center on the west bank of the river Cali. Enjoy lunch at your own discretion before immersing yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Bulevar del Rio and Plazoleta Varela, renowned for their colonial architecture and bustling cultural events, including street vendors, musicians, and artists.
Next, explore the San Antonio district, a historic and charming area of Cali characterized by narrow cobbled streets, colonial houses, and quaint craft shops. Admire the statue of Sebastián de Belalcázquez, the city’s founder, at the center of the main square, before marveling at the iconic El Gato del Rio monument.
In the late afternoon, join us for a brief salsa class at one of the city’s café-bars. Guided by an experienced instructor, you’ll have the opportunity to learn a few salsa steps and immerse yourself in the vibrant rhythm of Cali’s salsa scene. Afterward, return to your hotel. Dinner will be at your own discretion.
Day 10:
Popayán – Cali
After breakfast, embark on a journey to the Salento coffee region, a scenic drive of approximately 4 hours. Upon arrival, meet your English-speaking guide and transfer by private vehicle to Calarcá. Begin your exploration of the coffee region by delving into the history of Calarcá, known as “The City of the Cacique and the Cradle of Poets,” showcasing its typical architecture, vibrant market square, and local artwork adorning its streets.
Continue your adventure aboard a Jeep Willys, the traditional mode of transportation in the region,as you immerse yourself in the picturesque coffee-growing landscape, abundant fruit trees, and the rich biodiversity of birds and flowers that characterize the area. Your journey culminates at the home of a coffee-growing family, where you’ll gain insight into their lives and the profound role coffee production plays in their story, providing a second chance amidst Colombia’s challenging history of armed conflict.
Experience the warmth and hospitality of a local coffee-growing family as they share their expertise on the coffee-making process, from bean selection to roasting. Enjoy a delicious traditional lunch prepared by “la mama” and savor a freshly brewed cup of coffee. Afterward, return to town to retrieve your vehicle and transfer to your accommodation in Salento. Check-in at your hotel. Enjoy exploring local dining options on your own. (Please note: Dinner is not included.)
Day 11:
Cocora Valley – Salento village
Breakfast at the hotel. The Cocora Valley is renowned for the Wax Palm, Colombia’s national tree, which stands as the world’s tallest (reaching up to 70 meters). The beauty of the landscape offers a delightful hike of up to 2 hours along mountain trails. You can have lunch either in the Cocora Valley or directly in Salento (decide at the time of your reservation).
You will return to the town of Salento, the oldest municipality in the department, earning it the name ‘Father of the Municipalities’ as the first one founded. Famous for its colorful architecture and traditional atmosphere. Before returning to the accommodation, we will enjoy our unique Colombian indigenous sport ‘Tejo,’ practiced since the time of the Muisca (indigenous) people. It involves throwing metal discs called ‘tejo’ towards a target or ‘bocín’ located in the center of a clay platform, accompanied by a ‘pola colombiana’ (Colombian beer). Alternatively, you can choose to visit a small family where you will learn about their dream of transforming from a small artisanal chocolate factory into a chocolate industry.
This transformation aims to process all the cacao produced in the region, becoming generators of wealth, job opportunities, and well-being for our beloved Quindío! You will have the chance to taste a dessert at the end. Return to the hotel and dinner on your own.
Day 12:
Salento – Armenia – Cartagena
After breakfast at the hotel, transfer to Armenia or Pereira airport for a flight to Cartagena. Upon arrival, enjoy a private vehicle transfer to your hotel located in the heart of Cartagena’s historic center. Lunch and dinner will be at your own discretion. Fee time to explore the city center.
Day 13:
Cartagena – La Boquilla Community – Getsemani Quarter – Fort San Felipe
After breakfast at the hotel, depart by private vehicle for the Afro-Colombian fishing village of La Boquilla, nestled on the beach amidst mangroves. Experience a traditional canoe trip through the marshes guided by a local fisherman, who will share insights into the village’s history and the surrounding ecosystem of mangroves. Enjoy a tasting of refreshing coconut water upon return, followed by a percussion class led by village youth, immersing yourself in Afro-Caribbean rhythms.
Later, return to Cartagena for a guided tour of the historic center, featuring landmarks such as the church and monastery of San Pedro Claver, the Cathedral, and the vibrant Getsemani district known for its graffiti and colorful alleyways. Lunch at your own. In the afternoon, explore the Fort of San Felipe de Barajas, a remarkable example of Spanish military architecture constructed in 1536 to safeguard the city against pirates and privateers. Wander through its tunnels and underground galleries, delving into its rich history.
Afterward, return to the hotel to relax. Dinner for you to enjoy at your own.
Day 14:
Cartagena – Barú Peninsula – Cartagena
Begin the day with breakfast at the hotel before transferring by private vehicle to the port of La Bodeguita for a scenic sea journey to the Barú Peninsula (approximately 45 minutes). Upon arrival, check-in at the hotel and enjoy a leisurely afternoon on the beach, soaking up the sun and indulging in optional activities. Lunch is included, and you’ll return to Cartagena at the agreed time. Dinner is not included.
Day 15:
Cartagena – Bogotá – Return
Breakfast. At the agreed time, transfer to the airport for your return flight to Bogotá or your international flight.
